NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team concluded day two of play at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday. The Hawkeyes shot eight-over par (288), bringing their 36-hole total to 21-over par, and sit in 15th place.
Freshman Bennett Warren, junior Max Tjoa, and redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel lead the Hawkeyes at three-over par, tied for 25th. Warren made the second-biggest jump amongst all golfers on Saturday, moving up 38 spots after shooting two-under par. The Olathe, Kansas native carded five birdies, and his round tied for the sixth-lowest score of the day.
“The scores were better, but we still left far too many strokes out there”, said head coach Tyler Stith. “The course played easier and we dropped a few spots. Bennett played solid. He started strong, had a little trouble on his ninth hole but recovered well and made a great par save on his last hole. I’m very happy for him. We had a couple other rounds that were close but had to count a 77. We need everyone locked in tomorrow to get those spots back. This group is more than capable we just need to execute.”
Tjoa shot one-over par, moving up one spot on the leaderboard, while Gudgel finished his second round at two-over par. Sophomore Ryan Shellberg is tied for 78th at 13-over par after shooting eight-over on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty is tied for 83rd at 17-over par, finishing his second round at seven-over.
The Hawkeyes are four-over on par threes, tied for fourth in the field, while their 27 birdies through two rounds are tied for seventh among all teams.
No. 33 UCLA leads the field by 11 strokes at 10-under par after shooting 11-under in round two. Josh Kim of UCLA leads the individual standings by two strokes at seven-under par after a four-under round on Saturday.
