IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Wartburg, 13-0, in seven innings on Tuesday evening at Duane Banks Field.
Iowa broke open the game with seven runs in the third inning. After Caleb Wulf doubled, Kooper Schulte plated Gable Mitchell and Wulf with a double up the middle. Mitch Wood followed with a double of his own, scoring Schulte and Brayden Strohmeyer. Jaixen Frost then reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing home Joey Nerat.
The Hawkeyes added three runs in the fifth. Mitchell lined a single up the middle to score Jaylen Ziegler, and Schulte followed with a two-run single through the right side to score Mitchell and Tyler Guerin.
Iowa tacked on three more in the sixth. Ben Swails doubled down the left-field line to score Kyle Alivo, and Matthew Delgado tripled to drive in Swails before scoring on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.
Schulte led the Hawkeyes with two hits and four RBIs.
Iowa’s pitching staff held the Knights scoreless on three hits across seven innings. Brady Ferguson earned the win in his first collegiate start, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three over two innings.
“The story today was that the pitchers did a great job,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Only allowing one leadoff hitter to reach base throughout the entire game. A three-hit shutout with a bunch of guys going out there, you can’t beat that. We had a lot of young guys on the mound today, and seeing them get more confident every time they step out there made it definitely worth playing today to get those guys some experience.”
Six other Hawkeyes saw the mound in the scheduled bullpen game: Carter Wilcox, Beau Leisure, John Henry Kohorst, Ty Mikkeisen, Cole Moore and Tate Slagle.
