The Hawkeyes scored in the opening inning as senior Gable Mitchell drew a leadoff walk and later came home on a wild pitch to give Iowa an early lead.
Iowa added to its advantage in the fourth inning when senior Caleb Wulf singled through the left side. Freshman Carter Geffre followed with a walk, and redshirt junior Kellen Strohmeyer drove in Wulf with a single to second base.
The Hawkeyes continued to build momentum in the fifth. Mitchell singled to left field and scored on Wulf’s single up the middle to extend the lead.
Mitchell sparked another scoring surge in the seventh with a single to third base. Senior Miles Risley followed with a two-run home run to left-center to make it a 5–0 game.
Iowa broke the game open in the eighth inning. Senior Joey Nerat drew a walk, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Senior Jaylen Ziegler entered as a pinch runner and later scored on a wild pitch. Strohmeyer added a single to left field, and Mitchell drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right. Risley capped the inning with a bunt single that scored senior Kooper Schulte.
The Hawkeyes tacked on two more runs in the ninth as Strohmeyer and Schulte each drove in a run.
Iowa’s pitching staff combined to hold the Redbirds scoreless on three hits over nine innings. Cole Moore started the scheduled bullpen game, tossing a scoreless first inning with one strikeout.
Freshman Carter Wilcox, senior Justin Hackett, junior Beau Leisure, senior Ganon Archer, freshman Brolan Frost and sophomore Tyler Guerin each pitched in relief to complete the shutout.
