Johnson Named B1G Field Athlete of the Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Ryan Johnson was named the Co-Field Athlete of the Week by the Big Ten, the conference announced on Wednesday.

The Springboro, Ohio, native opened his outdoor season with a school record in the hammer throw at the Jim Duncan Invite on April 10. Johnson launched a 75.75-meter throw to win the event. His attempt sailed over two meters farther than his previous personal record, which he set a season ago at the Musco Twilight. In his season debut, Johnson rose to No. 2 in the NCAA.

It is the first time Johnson has won the Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. He was a two-time honoree during indoor season. Iowa’s last outdoor conference field athlete of the week was Mike Stein in the javelin on March 27, 2024.

Johnson and the Hawkeyes return to action in five meets across the country beginning on Thursday.
