Coached three Olympians, four NCAA cross country, outdoor track, and mile relay champions, five Big Ten team championships, and athletes to sixty-six Big Ten cross country and track titles; member of Iowa Track Coach’s Association Hall of Fame; president of United States Track Coaches’ Association in 1978; as an athlete, awarded Big Ten Medal of Honor for scholarship and athletics in 1936; captain of track team in 1936; and track named in his honor (Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track).
