First All-American athlete for University of Iowa; first-team All-American and All-Big Ten conference lineman in 1916; volunteered for military service following his sophomore season and was killed in action at the Battle of Château-Thierry in July of 1918 in World War I; earned Distinguished Service Cross (United States’ second highest wartime honor); awarded Belgian War Cross and Croix de Guerre (highest award France can bestow for battlefield heroism); and American Legion Post number 138 named in his honor.
