Hawkeyes Fall to Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team dropped a one-goal contest to Michigan Friday afternoon at the Michigan Soccer Field. Iowa allowed an early goal to the Wolverines in the first half and was unable to mount a comeback despite holding Michigan scoreless in the second half.

Hawkeye goalkeeper Britta Vogele stopped eight Michigan shots on goal to lead the defensive effort. Only a Michigan first-half header, one of 17 shots on goal, reached the back of the net against the Iowa junior. Michigan’s Stephanie Chaver accepted a pass from teammate Therase Heaton off of a restart and snuck the ball past the Iowa defenders for the eventual game-winner at the 19:08 mark.

The Hawkeyes proceeded to play 70 minutes of shutout ball but managed just 10 shots on goal, none of which rolled by Michigan’s two-headed goalkeeping monster of Megan Tuura and Suzie Grech. Tuura held the Hawkeyes scoreless for 45 in the first half and Grech matched the effort with a scoreless second half. The duo recorded Michigan’s third shutout of the season and kept the Hawkeyes winless in Big Ten play. The loss runs Iowa’s record to 3-10-2 overall and 0-7-2 in conference play.

Iowa will aim for that elusive first conference victory Sunday against Michigan State at Old College Field in East Lansing, MI, beginning at 11 a.m.
