AMES – The slipper just simply fell off.

After clawing its way back from a double-digit deficit during the first half of action to take a 72-70 lead when senior Jennie Lillis dropped in a lay-up with just 1:27 remaining to play, Coach Lisa Bluder’s Iowa Hawkeyes were forced to play extra periods against intrastate rival Iowa State Wednesday and eventually lost, 101-94, in double overtime.

Lillis’ basket completed a 9-0 run by the visitors that capped a comeback that started from the opening tip. Iowa State led the entire game, building advantages of as many as 13 points during the first half and taking a 38-30 lead into intermission.

The Hawkeyes were paced by Jamie Cavey’s 23 points, the game’s top scorer. Cavey, however, fouled out with 1:41 to play in the game’s first overtime, a period that saw Iowa grab an 85-79 lead on Kristi Faulkner’s 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining. Iowa turned the ball over on its next two possessions and ISU took advantage, tying the game at 85-all on a layup by Lyndsey Medders with 12 seconds left to play.

ISU controlled the second overtime period from start to finish, claiming their third victory of the season against one loss. Iowa, which plays at Marquette on Friday, fell to 3-2.

All five of Iowa’s starters scored in double-figures. Faulkner dropped in 22, Lillis 14, Lindsay Richard 12 and Johanna Solverson 10. Solverson also grabbed nine rebounds.
