The University of Iowa men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the annual intrasquad meet on Wednesday at the Iowa Recreation Building. The long jump and triple jump events will be held on Tuesday. Events on Wednesday begin at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

2004 IOWA MEN’S OUTLOOK
The Iowa men’s track and field team, led by Head Coach Larry Wieczorek, returns 20 of 24 letterwinners from last year’s track team. The Hawkeyes look to be a balanced team, with outstanding athletes in the distance, sprints, hurdles, and throws. Junior Juan Coleman returns after redshirting in 2003. Coleman ran on Iowa’s Big Ten Champion 400-meter relay in 200. He is a four-time NCAA qualifier in the 1,600-meter relay. Senior Russell Peterson also returns after a redshirt season. Peterson has also qualified for the national meet three times in the 1,600-meter relay and once in the 400-meter relay. Senior and two-time all American Bill Neumann looks to defend his two-time Big Ten Championship in the javelin. Junior Ken Kemeny is a two-time NCAA qualifier in the shot put and returns after a redshirt season in 2003. Juniors Matt Esche, Ben Lloyd, Tony Rakaric, Dan Trainor, and redshirt freshman Micah VanDenend have the potential to rewrite school distance records in 2004. Rakaric and Esche both scored for the Hawkeyes in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, respectively, at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
2004 IOWA WOMEN’S OUTLOOK
After a successful 2003 campaign, Iowa women’s Head Coach James Grant returns 17 letterwinners, including five of Iowa’s seven NCAA qualifiers. The record breaking 1,600 meter relay team returns Aisha Hume and Shellene Williams. Williams had a breakout year in 2003, winning Big Ten titles in the 400 meters and as part of the 1,600 meter relay. She placed fifth in the 400 meters at the NCAA regional and advanced to the semifinals in that event at the NCAA Championships. Hume placed fourth in the 400 meters at the 2003 Big Ten Championships. Freshman Peaches Roach will make an immediate impact in the high jump. Roach was the 2003 Jamaican national high jump champion and represented Jamaica at the 2003 Pan American Games and the 2003 IAAF World Championships. Her best leap of 6-0 1/2 would be a new school record for the Hawkeyes. Junior Alana Redfern qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional in the javelin with a personal-best and school record thow at the Iowa Musco Twilight V. She placed second at the Big Ten Championships and third at the NCAA Midwsst Regional.
