TAMPA, FL – The University of Iowa softball team split a pair of games on the final day of pool play at the Speedline Tournament in Tampa, FL. The Hawkeyes opened with a thrilling, 2-1, extra-inning win over Troy State, then fell to Tennessee-Chattanooga 1-0.
In the first game, sophomore Emily Gerlick came through with a game-winning RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to give the win to Iowa.
Troy State used a pair of hits in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 leady. A sacrifice fly by Natalie Johnson tied things up in the fifth. The game remained tied at 1-1 through regulation.
Hawkeye starter Lisa Birocci threw all eight innings for Iowa, allowed only five hits and struck out 14.
In game two, Iowa couldn’t get it’s offense going and fell 1-0 to Tennessee-Chattanooga.
The Hawkeyes will head into bracket play tommorow at a time to be determined.
