BRADENTON, FL — Massachusetts’ center Frank Curreri and first baseman Matt Reynolds had back-to-back RBI doubles to defeat Iowa 4-2 in ten innings at IMG Academy on Wednesday.
Hawkeye reliever Chris Maliszewski entered the game in the ninth with a 2-1 Iowa lead. The senior got a groundout to start the inning, but UMASS right fielder Jason Twomley tripled off the right field wall and scored on a SAC fly to tie the game.
Starting Iowa pitcher Andrew Hansen pitched six innings and allowed one run on five hits, walked three and had three strikeouts. Hansen loaded the bases in the third with two walks and a hit batter, setting up Massachusetts’ Mike Athas for a SAC fly which gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead. Curreri flied out to left to end the inning.
The Hawkeyes’ Mike Best, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game, doubled to lead off the fourth. Best attempted to steal third and drew a game of pickle between second baseman Cullan Maumus and Adam Stojanowski at third. When Maumus overthrew, Best leveled the score at one apiece.
In the sixth inning, Nate Yoho led off with a double into a gap in right center and scored on Best’s single to left. After a sacrifice bunt to advance Best to second, third baseman Luis Andrulonis reached after being plunked by a pitch. Athas, the shortstop, ended the threat when catcher Clint Bitting hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
Freshman Michael Washburn pitched two innings for the Hawkeyes and gave up one hit. Second baseman Andy Lytle went 2-for-4 in the game.
Eric Chown (2-1) pitched a complete game for the Minutemen’s victory. He allowed one earned run on eight hits and struck out three Iowa batters against one walk.
Iowa (3-7) will play two games on Thursday. The Hawkeyes will face Bucknell at 9 a.m. at the IMG Academy and Miami (OH) at 2:30 p.m. at the Cincinnati Reds complex.
