Houston, TX – The University of Iowa women’s track and field team opened up the 2004 outdoor season on Friday at the Texas Southern Relays and is in fourth place after the first day of competition. The Hawkeyes won two events and qualified one athlete for the 2004 NCAA Regional Championships to be held May 28-29 in College Station, TX.

Junior Alana Redfern won the javelin and had a regional qualifying throw in her first competition of the year. Her mark of 45.52 meters is over two meters longer than the regional qualifying standard. The 4×800 meter relay of Atalie Barber, Jordan Laney, Michelle Sokol and Shannon Stanley also placed first with a time of 9:07.08, finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of the competition. Senior Jessie Strand finished third in the pole vault with a jump of 3.60 meters. The 1,600 meter sprint medley team of Aisha Hume, Lindsey McCalla, Jodyann Raymond and Shellene Williams finished fourth in 4:13.42.

Competition at the Texas Southern Relays will conclude on Saturday with events slated for a 10:00 a.m. start.
