SACRAMENTO, CA – The University of Iowa softball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the Sacramento State Capitol Classic. The Hawkeyes fell to Long Beach State 3-0, then lost to Long Island 2-1.
In game one, the Hawkeyes were stymied by Long Beach State’s Meredith Cervenka, who threw a perfect game.
Long Beach State scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth, stringing together four hits and chasing Iowa starter Ali Arnold from the game.
In game two, Iowa out-hit Long Island 8-4, but couldn’t get the timely hit.
Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off an RBI double from Margie Foster.
The Hawkeyes responded in the top of the fifth, when Emily Gerlick ripped a two-out double, then came around to score on an RBI single from Amanda Hentges.
Krystal Mejia gave the game to Long Island with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Iowa will finish up the Capitol Classic Sunday with a game against Nevada at 11 a.m.
