SACRAMENTO, CA – The University of Iowa Hawkeye softball team was defeated by Nevada, 2-0, in the final game of the 2004 Sacramento State Capitol Classic Sunday. Iowa fell to 15-12 and finished the Capitol Classic with a 1-4 record. Nevada raised its record to 23-12.
For the second-straight game, Iowa out-hit its opponent only to come up on the short end of the scoreboard. The Hawkeyes knocked out eight hits to Nevada’s four.
The game was scoreless heading into the top of the seventh, when Carrie Mackey hit a two-run home run off Iowa starter Lisa Birocci. Before the game-winning homer, Birocci had been cruising, striking out ten.
Senior Laura Chipman ripped a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh as Iowa attempted a rally, but it was all the offense the Hawkeyes could muster. Chipman was 3-for-3 on the day. Elisha Huse was 2-for-3.
The Hawkeyes will return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader against Illinois State in Normal, IL. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.
