Hawkeyes Fall to No. 48 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, MI – For the second straight day the Iowa men’s tennis team was swept by a ranked opponent with a 7-0 loss to 48th-ranked Michigan Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Iowa lost all three matches in doubles competition to fall behind early, 1-0. In the No. 2 match, freshmen Jonny Hoak and Walter Valarezo fell to Ryan Heller and Michael Rubin, 8-3. In the No. 1 match, freshman Sebastian Delgado and sophomore Chaitu Malempati were defeated by Anthony Jackson and Brian Hung by an identical 8-3 score. The Hawkeyes’ closest match came at the No. 3 position where sophomore Aaron Schaechterle and senior Matis Jasicek lost a close 8-6 battle to Vinny Gossain and Joseph Fischer.

Iowa was unable to make a comeback in singles competition. The Wolverines gained their first singles point and second of the match after Jasicek lost to Fischer in the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-1. Schaechterle then lost to Cary Rubin in the No. 5 match, 6-2, 6-4. In the No. 2 match, Malempati was downed by Jackson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Delgado then lost the No. 1 match to 49th-ranked Rubin, also by a 6-3, 6-3 score. After being edged by David Anving in the first set, 7-5, Hoak was defeated in the second set, 6-4, losing the No. 4 match. In the final match of the day, Valarezo fell to Hung in the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-4.

The Hawkeyes (3-11, 0-5) will return home to face 36th-ranked Northwestern. Competition is scheduled to begin Friday at 2 p.m. at the Klotz Tennis Courts.
