Ten members of the University of Iowa men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in adverse weather conditions at the 2004 Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday. The men competed in the 10,000 meters and the hammer throw while the women competed in the heptathlon and 10,000 meters.
Brad Daufeldt finished runner-up in the hammer throw with a toss of 203-02 (61.92 meters) while teammates Adam Hamilton and Chris Voller finished fifth and ninth respectively. All three had regional qualifying throws. A trio of Hawkeyes also competed in the 10,000 meters. Matt Esche placed 10th with a time of 30:08.82. Tony Rakaric finished 19th in 30:58.59 while Dan Haut was close behind in 20th with a time of 31:03.98.
Two members of the Iowa women’s team competed in the first four events of the heptathlon on Friday. Tiff Pedersen had a strong showing, finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles, sixth in the high jump, and third in both the shot put and 200 meters. She is currently in second place. Angie Hensel placed 11th in the 100 meter hurdles, 10th in the high jump, 7th in the shot put and 9th in the 200 meters. Nikki Chapple and Georgia Millward ran in the 10,000 meters. Chapple placed eighth with a time of 36:23.92 and Millward ended in 20th place with a time of 38:54.98.
