COLLEGE STATION, TX – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s track and field teams qualified two competitors for the NCAA Championships during the first day of competition at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in College Station, TX, Friday. Seniors Brad Daufeldt and Ken Kemeny placed fourth in the hammer throw (205-4) and shot put (61-4 1/4), respectively. The top five competitors in each individual event automatically advance to the NCAA meet, which will be held June 9-12 in Austin, TX. The men’s team is also in fifth place in the team standings with 12 points. Southern Methodist leads the men’s team field with 32.75 points.
Advancing to Saturday’s finals in running events were seniors Michelle Lahann, Russell Peterson and Shellene Williams. Lahann posted the third-best time in the 800-meter prelims (2:08.89). Peterson won his prelim heat of the 400-meter hurdles in 51.04, which was the third-best overall. Williams posted the fifth-best time in the 400-meter prelims (52.84).
The second day of regional competition will start at noon Saturday.
