Hawkeyes Play UW-Green Bay to 1-1 Draw

Sept. 12, 2004

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw against UW-Green Bay in double overtime on Sunday. Junior Avery Bang recorded her first goal as a Hawkeye in the 65th minute.

Bang went top shelf on UW-Green Bay goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren off a pass from Lindsey Phillips to put the Hawkeyes ahead 1-0. Stephanie Gross answered with the equalizer in the 86th minute. The Hawkeyes saw their best scoring opportunity in the 7th minute of the second overtime when Whitney Strain came away with the ball after Wikgren mishandled a cross. Strain struck the ball into the back of the net but the referee ruled that Wikgren had possession and Strain was given a yellow card. In the 8th minute of the second overtime, freshman Katie Mulvahill blasted a shot that sailed just wide, catching the side of the net.

The Hawkeyes battled the entire 110 minutes of a physical match. A total of 24 fouls were called on the day. The Hawkeyes outshot UW-Green Bay 17-11, including two shots on goal.

Iowa’s next match is September 17 against Purdue in West Lafayette, IN. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
