Former Iowa linebacker and Most Valuable Player Larry Ely has been named the Iowa football team’s honorary captain for Saturday’s game against Ohio State. Kickoff is set for 2:37 p.m. in Kinnick Stadium. The game is sold out.

Ely, a three-year letterman (1967-69), was named Iowa’s most valuable player following his senior season. He also served as co-captain of the 1969 team. Although he finished his collegiate career as a linebacker, the Des Moines native was an offensive guard until mid-way through his junior campaign. He had 99 tackles his senior season.

Ely played in the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl following the 1969 season. He was drafted in the 16th round of the 1970 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He played for the Bengals and Chicago Bears during an NFL career that extended thru the 1975 season.

Larry will accompany the current game captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin toss and he’ll be with the team on the sidelines during the game.
