Iowa to Compete in Marilyn Smith Invitational

THIS WEEK — The women’s golf team will compete in the 12-team Marilyn Smith/Sunflower Invitational Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 10-11. The tournament will be held on the par-72 Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, KS. The first 36 holes will be played Monday starting with an 8 a.m. shotgun. The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m.

THE COMPETITION — The 12 teams competing include: Arkansas-Little Rock, Denver, Illinois State, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri-Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Western Illinois, Wichita State and UTEP.

LINEUP — Competing for Iowa will be seniors Liz Bennett and Shannon Fleming, sophomores Amy Riepma and Karla Murra and freshmen Jill Marcum and Maggie Gelber.

IOWA VS. TOURNAMENT FIELD — Iowa has already competed against two schools that will be competing in the Marilyn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. The Hawkeyes defeated Arkansas-Little Rock in the Hawkeye Intercollegiate, but lost to Iowa State in the Notre Dame Invitational in their opening fall tournament.

LAST YEAR AT MARILYN SMITH INVITATIONAL — Iowa placed eighth in the 12-team 2003 tournament. Liz Bennett paced the Hawkeyes, placing ninth with a 54-hole score of 235.

LAST COMPETITION — Iowa won the Hawkeye Intercollegiate for the sixth time in history. Iowa (943) won the competition by 10 strokes over second place Northern Iowa (953). Senior Liz Bennett tied for first, firing a 54-hole score of 224. Sophomore Amy Riepma placed fifth after stroking a 238, while freshman Jill Marcum posted a 240 and finished ninth.

COLE POSTS CAREER BEST SCORES — Senior Lauren Cole carded a career-low 81 during the second round of the Hawkeye Intercollegiate. In addition, her 54-hole score of 249 was a career best.

QUOTING COACH CARNEY — “It’s always a positive thing when you win a tournament. I think our players have gained confidence since winning our last tournament. We have to stay focused in practice on improving our swing and skills. I believe we are capable of finishing in the top half of the tournament field in Kansas.”
