The University of Iowa men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams routed the competition Friday evening at the Fieldhouse Pool. The Hawkeye women defeated Truman State 171-123 and the men beat Truman State 163-90 and South Dakota 160-108. Truman State came out on top over South Dakota, 161-117.
Hawkeye diver Nancilea Underwood dominated both the one- and three-meter diving events. In the one-meter, she took first with a score of 317.35. She then set a University of Iowa school and Fieldhouse pool record in the three-meter diving event, as she took first with a score of 348.25. Senior Lisette Planken took second in both the one-meter (279.45) and three-meter (306.25).
The men and women started the meet strong, taking first place in both the men’s and women’s 400 medley relay. The women’s team comprised of Jennifer Skolaski, Katie Haeger, Kelly Werner and Katie Martin captured first with a time of 3:51.22. Caitlin Girdley, Kristen Eide, Andrea Hemphill and Karen Kelly, of Iowa B, took third for the Hawkeyes with a time of 3:57.17. The Hawkeye men swept the event taking the top three places. Andrei Ciurca, Calvin Shelangoski, Nathan Keeling, and Bryan Rowland took first with a time of 3:25.52.
The Hawkeyes continued their dominance as Cody Hackney took first in the men’s 1000 free (9:56.24) and the Hawkeye women swept the top three places in the 200 free competition. Senior Jennifer Skolaski took first (1:52.44), junior Erica Noah finished second (1:55.11), and senior Abby VanMaaren took third (1:55.73). Junior Cameron Dye took first in the men’s 200 free with a time of 1:43.79.
The Iowa men and women swept the 100 back competitions as juniors Kelly Werner finished first for the women (56.70) and Eric Hahn took first for the men (51.77). Freshmen Cade Ashby and Andrej Lenert filled out the top three for the men with times of 52.95 and 52.97, respectively.
The Hawkeye men and women took the top two spots in the men’s 100 breast and men’s and women’s 200 fly competitions. Sophomore Paul Divan and senior Joe Lureau were the top two swimmers in the men’s 100 breast with times of 58.28 and 58.50, respectively. Andrea Hemphill and Kristen Eide then took first (2:06.80) and second (2:07.52) in the women’s 200 fly. Trevor Haley and Nate Billups followed with first and second place finishes in the men’s 200 fly with times of 1:53.60 and 1:55.77, respectively.
VanMaaren and senior Alex Boyce both took first in the women’s and men’s 50 free with times of 24.42 and 21.06, respectively, while Skolaski and senior Natan Pheil swept the 200 back competitions. Skolaski provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships as her time of 2:01.12 met the NCAA B Standard.
Freshman Dragos Agache and Divan also swept the 200 breast competition, taking first (2:04.79) and second (2:07.72), respectively. Senior Elliot Ptasnik swam to a first-place finish in the 500 free (4:49.99) before the Iowa men and women swept the 100 fly events. Werner notched her third first-place finish of the night with a time of 56.49 in the 100 fly, while Hahn captured his second first-place finish with a 51.24.
The Iowa women finished the meet strong as Skolaski timed a 2:06.21 for a first-place finish in the 200 IM before the 200 free relay team consisting of VanMaaren, Kelly, Mindy Schulte, and Katie Haeger tied for first with a time of 1:36.47.
The Hawkeye men and women will travel to Minneapolis, MN next weekend to compete in the Minnesota Invitational.
