MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team finished the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational in fourth place, while the men are currently in fifth.

The Iowa women’s swimming and diving team was led by a pair of divers in day one of the Minnesota Invitational. Senior Lisette Planken won the one-meter diving competition breaking a meet record with a score of 299.85. Her teammate Nacilea Underwood placed third with a score of 277.35. The women’s 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams both placed fourth. The team of Abby Van Maaren, Katie Martin, Katie Haeger and Karen Kelly finished with a time of 1:36.91 in the finals of the 200 freestyle relay, while Jennifer Skolaski, Katie Haeger, Kelly Werner and Katie Martin finished in a time of 3:54.00. Senior Jennifer Skolaski finished eighth in the 500 freestyle timing a 5:04.45. Skolaski’s finish was the highest individual finish of any Hawkeye swimmer in the first day of competition. Katelyn Eustis and Erica Noah finished 12th and 14th , respectively, in the event. Junior Andrea Hemphill finished ninth in 200 individual medley just missing a spot in Heat A of the finals. Hemphill’s time of 2:08.32 in the finals was nearly three seconds better than her time in the preliminaries. Senior Kristen Eide also competed in the finals of the event, placing 16th.

The men’s team also had a strong showing in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay finals, with both teams finishing eighth. The Hawkeyes’ team of Alex Boyce, Bryan Rowland, Andrei Ciurca and Cameron Dye timed in with a 1:24.98, while the team of Eric Hahn, Calvin Shelangoski, Trevor Haley and Cade Ashby finished in a time of 3:28.33. Dye also swam to a 12th-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:39.98. The Hawkeyes had six swimmers qualify for the three finals heats in the 200 individual medley. Trevor Haley (12th), Elliot Ptasnik (13th) and Joe Lureau (16th) all placed in the top 16. Senior Alex Boyce placed 16th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.52.

Iowa’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will continue competition at the Minnesota Invitational tomorrow at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. Fans can follow the competition with live stats at www.gophersports.com.
