Iowa to Host Truman State and South Dakota

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team will host Truman State and South Dakota at the UI Fieldhouse Pool. Competition will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday. Iowa enters the competition 0-3 (0-2 Big Ten), while South Dakota is 1-0 (0-0 NCC) and Truman State is 1-0 (0-0 MAI). Admission is free to the public.

SCOUTING TRUMAN STATE AND SOUTH DAKOTA
These two Division II programs will bost a tough competition for the Hawkeyes. Last season, South Dakota (T6th) and Truman State (16th) both finished in the top 20 of the NCAA Championships. This season, both teams opened with strong victories. South Dakota defeated intrastate Division I rival South Dakota State (143-49). Truman State defeated Washington (MO) (148.5-111.5) and then went on to finish second in its Bulldog Invitational.

LAST WEEK
The Iowa men’s swimming and diving team fell to Notre Dame 176-118. Despite loosing to the Irish, the Hawkeyes had a very strong showing in the pool setting numerous season best times. Senior Alex Boyce, junior Andrei Ciurca and freshman Dragos Agache had two individual victories as well as being involved on the victorious 200 medley relay team which posted a season best time of 1:32.04.

“We are looking forward to swimming some people in some events they don’t usually get to swim to give them a little bit of a mental break before the Minnesota Invitational next weekend.”

HEAD COACH John Davey
Former Hawkeye all-American John Davey is in his seventh year as head swim coach. He has an 18-36 overall mark at Iowa, going 8-4 last season. Davey is the only Big Ten athlete in any sport to ever be named conference Athlete of the Year in their sport four consecutive years. While at Iowa, Davey won 10 Big Ten titles and was a 10-time all-American. He is assisted by former Wisconsin all-American Robert Pinter.

DIVING COACH Bob Rydze
Bob Rydze is in his 30th year as diving coach of the men’s and women’s teams at the University of Iowa, and is the dean of Big Ten swimming and diving coaches.
