Q-and-A with Abby Emmert

Dec. 21, 2004

hawkeyesports.com visited recently with freshman guard Abby Emmert from Winterset, IA. Here’s a piece of that conversation.

What is your favorite basketball-related memory?
“My entire senior season of high school… we had a blast!”

What technological advancement (i.e. cell phone, ipod, dvd player, wireless internet, etc.) would you not be able to live without?
“A VCR. Even though it’s kind of old school, I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t tape my favorite programs so I could watch them at a later date.”

If you could be a contestant on any reality TV show, which one would it be and why?
“I would want to be on the Real World/Road Rules Battle of the Sexes. I wouldn’t deal with the drama very well, but I think I could do alright with some of the challenges and make a little money.”

When you were little, who did you pretend to be and why?
“I usually pretended to be one of the high school basketball players in Winterset because the Huskies were my favorite team and I looked up to all of them.”

If you could be a star in any sport, other than basketball, what would it be any why?
“Gymnastics or swimming. They are always the stars of the Olympics and have neat U.S.A. gear.”

If you could meet anyone (past or present) whom would you want to meet and why?
“Ben Stiller, so I could find out if he is as funny in real life as he is in all of his movies.”

What has been the hardest adjustment to college basketball and education and why?
“Playing defense and preparing for exams have seemed to be the hardest adjustments so far. I can’t really explain it, but both are more challenging in college than in high school.”

What activities/hobbies do you like to do in your spare time or in the off-season?
“I like to play games with my friends, watch TV, and go on road trips. Last summer I started to play more golf and I think it’s something I will do more off this spring and summer.”

What is your favorite movie quote and why?
“My favorite quote is in the movie Miracle when the coach is making them skate sprints. He asks Eruzione who he plays for and he says, `The United States of America!'”

What is something people might not know about you?
“I’ve never seen the movie Titanic. I’m hoping it will be my claim to fame a few years down the road.”

What is your favorite TV show (past or present) and character and why?
“It’s a tie between, The O.C. and Saved by the Bell. My favorite character is Zach Morris from Saved by the Bell, because he’s always having a good time and I really like his attitude towards life.”
