Louisville, KY< -=””>The University of Iowa softball team finished competition at the Courtyard by Mariott Red and Black Tournament with a loss to No. 24 Missouri, 3-1 in eight innings and a win over Ball State, 8-0 in six innings. The Hawkeyes left Louisville with a 3-1 record at the Red and Black Tournament.
The Hawkeyes battled throughout game one against Missouri. Iowa scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning when Emily Nichols knocked in Sami Baugh. Missouri countered with one run in the sixth to tie the game. Summer Downs took away an extra base hit in the top of the seventh inning with a diving stop up the middle to help send the game to extra innings. Missouri scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth with a two-run home run and Iowa could not plate a run in their half of the inning.
Sami Baugh led the Hawkeyes offensively, going 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Lisa Birocci took the loss for Iowa. Birocci gave up three runs on six hits and struck out 12.
Iowa bounced back against Ball State, scoring four runs in the second inning to gain an early lead. Summer Downs and Jenna Spratt led the Hawkeyes at the plate. Downs was 3-4 with a double and two RBI while Spratt was 2-4 with two runs scored. Sami Baugh had another strong game, recording three RBI. Ali Arnold threw a two-hit shutout and recorded 11 strikeouts for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa will travel to Atlanta, GA next weekend to compete in the Buzz Classic. Competition begins on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
