WICHITA, KS – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to the No. 21 Wichita State Shockers Friday night in Wichita, KS, in the first game of a three-game set.
Iowa and Wichita State each had seven hits on the game, but the Hawkeyes were unable to get the timely knock and left 13 runners stranded.
The Hawkeyes struck first in the top of the second when Kris Welker ripped a double then scored on a single by Andy Cox for a 1-0 lead. Welker was 2-4 on the day and the only Hawkeye with multiple hits. Cox ended the day 1-4.
The Shockers tied the game in the bottom of the innings when a walk and a hit batsman set the table for Brandon Hall’s RBI single. Joe Muich gave Wichita State the lead with a two-run single in the third. The Shockers added a run in the fourth and two in the seventh to take the 6-1 win.
Junior Luke O’Loughlin (0-1) took the loss for Iowa, throwing six and 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and six runs (four earned). Sophomore Chris Zinn pitched an inning and a third of hitless relief.
Shocker ace Mike Pelfrey scattered six hits over seven innings, striking out 11 while walking one. He upped his record to 4-2.
Iowa (4-8) and Wichita State (20-6) will continue the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
