WICHITA, KS – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated by No. 21 Wichita State, 7-3, Sunday in the finale of the three-game series in Wichita.
A five-run seventh did in the Hawkeyes, who led in each of the three games this weekend, only to have the Shockers come storming back.
Leading 3-2, Iowa reliever Chris Zinn gave up a pinch hit double to Blake Hurlbutt to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice. Two doubles, a Hawkeye error and an RBI groundout later, Wichita State had a 7-3 lead.
The Shocker’s clamped down on the Iowa offense from then on, and the Hawkeyes managed just one baserunner the rest of the way.
Zinn (0-1) took the loss for Iowa. Austin Seward started on the hill, scattering six hits in five and 1/3 innings.
On offense, Nate Price, Skylar Moss and Jason White each had two hits. Senior Andy Lytle was 1-3 with two RBIs.
The Hawkeyes (4-10) will return to action Wednesday with a game at Illinois State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
