Hawkeyes Fall Short in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, IL – Despite breaking four University of Iowa records and setting five 2005 season bests, the sixth-ranked University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team fell to the Japan All-Stars, as well as the second-ranked Fighting Illini, Saturday evening at Huff Hall. Iowa set the school record, since the 2001 code, with their team score of 219.025, but could not match Japan’s 226.375 or Illinois’ 223.9.

Iowa junior Michael Reavis was outstanding for the Hawkeyes, taking third in the all-around competition and finishing behind only two Japan All-Stars. His six-event score of 54.65 set a University of Iowa school record as well. Reavis tied for second on floor exercise (9.55), took third on vault (9.45), and tied for fourth on horizontal bar (9.55).

Senior Linas Gaveika also performed well for Iowa, taking fourth in the all-around with a personal season-best score of 53.975. He tied for third on pommel horse (9.425) and tied for fourth on horizontal bar (9.55).

Iowa senior Kenny Lin set a University of Iowa record with his score of 9.7 on rings. He tied for fifth in the event. Sophomore Michael McNamara was the Hawkeye’s top finisher on both floor exercise and parallel bars. He tied for second on floor with a score of 9.55, and tied for 11th on parallel bars (8.85).

As a team, the Hawkeyes set a University of Iowa record with their team score of 37.4 on rings and posted a season-best score of 36.6 on pommel horse.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Norman, OK, to take on No. 3 Oklahoma, Friday, March 11. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
