Hawkeyes Qualify Four For NCAA Championships

NORMAN, OK – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s track and field teams automatically qualified four student-athletes for the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships at the two-day NCAA Midwest Regional in Norman, OK. On Saturday, sophomore Peaches Roach and freshman Kineke Alexander placed second in the high jump and 400 meters, respectively, to earn automatic bids in those events. On Friday Seniors Ken Kemeny and Tim Brodersen automatically qualified in the shot put and discus, respectively. The Hawkeye men’s and women’s team both placed 17th in the team standings. The Iowa women scored 17 team points, and the men scored 15. Texas won the women’s team title with 75 points, and Nebraska won the men’s title with 92.5.

Iowa competed in eight events on Saturday. Roach placed second in the high jump with a season-best 5-11 1/4. Alexander ran a career-best 52.34 in the 400-meter finals for second place. Junior Chris Voller placed eighth in the hammer throw (195-4), while the women’s 1,600-meter relay of sophomore Lindsey McCalla, Alexander, sophomore Erin Sheeley and Aisha Hume placed eighth with a season-best 3:39.67. Freshman Meghan Armstrong placed ninth in the 1,500 meters (4:33.58) and senior Kamesha Marshall placed ninth in the shot put (47-9). Senior Tony Rakaric placed 15th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:18.30).

The 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Sacramento, CA.
