IOWA CITY, IA –
The University of Iowa cross country teams hosted the 2005 Hawkeye Open at Ashton Cross Country Course. Both teams were outstanding capturing not only individual victories but team victories as well. The women captured the first team victory in their 3K race with a final score of 26 edging out UNI by 15 points. Iowa men also literally ran away with the victory in their 6K finishing with only 18 points, 32 points less than second place Illinois.
Both the men and women’s team also had the individual winner as well. The women had the top two finishers Megan Armstrong and Shannon Stanley. Armstrong set a new Ashton Cross Country Course 3K race record with a time of 10:25 previously held by teammate Stanley. Stanley who finished ironically with the exact same time she had last year of 10:27, which in 2004 broke the course record. The men’s team finished with the top four finishers in their race. Amazingly, now these top four finishers also place in the top four in the course record book. Leading course record breaking Hawkeyes and winning the race was Eric MacTaggart who finished with a time of 18:18. Teammates Dan Haut (18:24), Jeff Kent (18:27), and Adam Roche (18:33) were right behind MacTaggart at the finish line.
Iowa men will compete next weekend at the Iowa State Open in Ames, IA, on Friday, September 9. Iowa women’s next competition will be at the UWP Midwest Collegiate in Parkside, WI, on September 17.
