ARLINGTON, TX – The University of Iowa volleyball team defeated the University of Texas-Pan American, 3-0 (30-16, 30-27, 30-22), Friday afternoon at the UTA Hilton Invitational in Arlington, TX.
Junior middle hitter Melanie Meister led the way for Iowa, recording 13 kills and hitting at an amazing .550 clip during the match. Sophomore outside hitter Stacy Vitali added 11 kills and a .364 attack percentage, while freshman setter Kiley Fister dished out 27 assists.
The Hawkeyes dominated game one of the match, rattling off ten-consecutive points at one time to take a 22-5 lead. Iowa cruised the rest of the way before freshman Felicia Booth ended things with her first-career kill.
Game two was closer, with Texas-Pan American mounting a late charge as Iowa was looking to close the door. Meister led the way for Iowa in game two, pounding out seven kills and a pair of service aces.
The Hawkeyes closed out the match in style, leading almost the entire game. Vitali registered a kill and a block to put Iowa one point from the sweep, then a Texas-Pan American service error ended the match.
Iowa battles Texas-Arlington tonight at 7 p.m.
