MADISON, WI — The Hawkeyes had a tough last day of competition Sunday at the Wisconsin Invitational. The team went 1-6 in singles play against Wisconsin and 2-1 in doubles play against Northern Illinois.
Sophomore Bart van Monsjou ended his weekend singles play with a loss to Jeremy Sonkin of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Christian Bierich finished with the Hawkeyes only singles win of the day, defeating Felipe Bellido of Wisconsin, 6-3, 6-3. The team had a tough time overall in singles play as they compiled a 1-6 record for the day. Bierich and van Monsjou had the best Hawkeye records for single play at the invitational, 4-1 and 3-1, respectively.
The Hawkeyes preformed better in doubles play, ending with a 2-1 record for the day. The team of senior Aaron Schaechterle and van Monsjou defeated Zegarra and Livingston of Northern Illinois, 8-6. Freshman Greg Holm and Bierich teamed up to beat Katz and Hayes of Northern Illinois, 8-6. Both of these teams finish with a Hawkeye-best 3-1 record in doubles play at the invitational.
“I was very pleased with our performance,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We were very successful from a team standpoint. We have made significant progress in practice and it showed up at Wisconsin.”
The Hawkeyes’ final record was 14-15 in singles and 7-5 in doubles for the weekend. The squad will be in action again on October 20-24 at the ITA regionals in Michigan.
