WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Drew Tate passed for a career-high 357 yards and tossed three touchdown passes to lead Iowa to a 34-17 win over Purdue.
Clinton Solomon added five receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and Albert Young rushed for 165 yards on 36 carries.
Purdue’s Brandon Kirsch threw for a career-high 353 yards, but he made a costly mistake that ended the Boilermakers’ momentum in the fourth quarter. Purdue, trailing 23-17 early in the final period, drove to the Iowa 11 before Edmond Miles bobbled, then intercepted a pass Kirsch forced into the end zone.
Iowa (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) took the ensuing possession 80 yards for a score that put the game out of reach. Tate, celebrating his 21st birthday, threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Solomon with 7:29 left to put the Hawkeyes up 29-17.
Purdue (2-3, 0-2) is off to its worst start in coach Joe Tiller’s nine-year tenure.
The Hawkeyes gained 535 yards, the third straight game Purdue’s defense has given up more than 500 yards.
Iowa took a 14-7 lead in the first quarter on two of Tate’s touchdown passes, including a 78-yarder to Solomon. Kirsch threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dorien Bryant to cut Iowa’s lead to 17-14 at halftime.

The teams combined for 538 yards before the break.
Purdue held Iowa out of the end zone in the third quarter to stay in the game.
Iowa’s Kyle Schlicher missed a 47-yard field goal with 14:08 left in regulation that would have given the Hawkeyes a 26-17 lead. It was his first missed kick of the year after connecting on 21 extra points and seven field goals. He later missed an extra point.
Bryant caught 10 passes for 141 yards in his second consecutive game with double-digit catches, and Kyle Ingraham caught 10 passes for 117 yards for the Boilermakers.
Kory Sheets led Purdue with 78 yards on 16 carries in his first start, and he scored the game’s first touchdown on a 15-yard run.
