Hawkeyes Finish Sixth At National Duals

Cedar Falls, IA – The University of Iowa wrestling team finished sixth at the 2006 N.W.C.A/Cliff Keen National Duals on Sunday. The Hawkeyes were defeated by Michigan, 19-15 in the fifth place match.

Iowa jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after Lucas Magnani (125) gained a 5-4 decision over Michigan’s Michael Watts. Michigan evened the match when Mark Moos defeated Daniel Dennis (133), 12-6. The Wolverines took their first lead of the match after Alex Tsirtsis (141) was defeated by Josh Churella, 3-1. Iowa tied the match at 6-6 with a 7-4 decision from Ty Eustice (149) and Joe Johnston (157) followed with a 6-4 overtime decision to give the Hawkeyes a 9-6 lead. Johnston recorded a takedown in the first overtime period for the win.

Michigan countered with an 8-0 major decision from Ryan Churella over Eric Luedke (165) and a fall from Nick Roy over Ben Stedman (174) to regain the lead at 16-9. Paul Bradley (184) and Dan Erekson (197) recorded back-to-back decisions to bring the match score to 16-15 in favor of the Wolverines heading into the final bout of the match. Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, Matt Fields (Hwt.) was unable to overcome Greg Wagner, who won the match, 4-0 to give Michigan the final advantage.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Friday, January 20 when the travel to Madison to face the Wisconsin Badgers. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
