The University of Iowa baseball team fell to the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Express Collegiate Classic in San Antonio, TX. It was the third-consecutive loss for the Hawkeyes (5-4).
The Hawkeyes were stymied by Ragin’ Cajun starter Jason Fernandez, who allowed just four hits and two runs while throwing a complete game.
For Iowa, sophomore starter David Conroy allowed just one run in five innings of work.
The Hawkeyes took an early 1-0 lead when freshman Kevin Hoef ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Iowa stretched the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Hoef was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jason White, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice from Nate Price.
Louisiana-Lafayette tied things up the next half inning on RBIs from Josh Landry and Tim Santiago. Things remained knotted at 2-2 until the eighth, when the Ragin’ Cajuns used a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly to push a run across.
Iowa will return to action tomorrow with a 7 p.m. rematch with Notre Dame, who defeated Iowa 16-2 Saturday.
