SAN ANTONIO, TX – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 7-5, Thursday in San Antonio, TX. The Hawkeyes fall to 6-6 on the year.
With the scored tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Notre Dame got a one-out single from Craig Cooper. Danny Dressman followed that up with an RBI triple, then scored on a sacrifice squeeze to give the Irish a 7-5 lead.
The Hawkeyes went 1-2-3 in the ninth, giving Notre Dame the win. Mike Dury (1-0) picked up the win for the Irish, while Kevin Sunderman (0-1) took the loss for Iowa.
Leadoff hitter Nate Price had a big day for Iowa, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Price singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jason White, went to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
The Fighting Irish put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of two-out RBIs off Iowa starter Jeff Maitland.
Iowa tied things up at 3-3 in the sixth with RBI singles from Dusty Napoleon and Wes Freie. The Hawkeyes looked to take the lead with runners on first and third with no outs, but Skyler Moss popped up an attempted squeeze bunt and Freie, who was running on the play, was double off.
Iowa plays Southern Illinois tonight.
