IOWA CITY, IA – The No. 40 Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Michigan State today, 6-1. Iowa claimed the doubles point and five singles wins in the match. Iowa’s record is now 11-3, including 3-0 in Big Ten play.

The Hawkeyes played their first match at their new home facility at the West Campus Tennis-Recreation Center on the University of Iowa campus. The competition took place on the outdoor courts, despite the cold temperatures.

“It was exciting to have our first match on these courts and come out with a win. We were prepared for the colder weather because we knew there was a chance we would be playing here today so we had practiced outdoors a few times this week. The weather didn’t affect us too much,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan.

Iowa began the match with a quick win at the number three doubles position. Mili Veselinovic and Krissy Dowlin defeated Pascale Schnitzer and Marianne Eelens, 8-0. Next to finish were Meg Racette and Jacqueline Lee, defeating Christine Bader and Sarah Andrews at the number one doubles position, 8-3. Hillary Mintz and Kayla Berry defeated Stephanie Kebler and Jessica Baron at the number two doubles position, 8-4.

After claiming the doubles point, Iowa won the first five singles matches that were completed. Mintz was the first to finish for Iowa, defeating Schnitzer, 6-0, 6-1 at the number two singles position. At the number four singles spot, Lee finished next, and defeated Kebler, 6-2, 6-2. Lee improved her winning streak to 12 and her spring record to 13-1. No. 33 Racette clinched the win for Iowa, winning her match against Bader with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Veselinovic defeated Baron, 6-1, 6-3, and Beelen defeated Eelens, 6-3, 6-3. Berry played a tough match against Andrews, but could not come up with the win. Andrews defeated Berry at the number five singles position in a tiebreaking set, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).

“Michigan State is a solid team and competed strongly today. Our girls also competed really well and I am thrilled with the win in our first match at this new facility,” said Coach Greenan.

Iowa will continue competition tomorrow against Michigan. Competition will take place at Clark Racquet Center in Cedar Rapids and is set to begin at 10 a.m.
