IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated by the Ohio State Buckeyes, 15-1, Sunday at Banks Field. The Hawkeyes (11-11, 1-3) were outhit 17-1 in the game.
The Buckeyes set the tone early, when leadoff hitter Jacob Howell hit the second pitch of the game out of the park for a home run. Ohio State posted four runs in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and five in the sixth to blow the Hawkeyes out of the water.
Buckeye starter J.B. Shuck took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but Iowa catcher Ben Geelan hit a towering home run that hit halfway up the light pole in left field. It was Geelan’s first of the season, and the first hit by a Hawkeye batter this year.
Travis Sweet took the loss for Iowa, allowing eight runs on ten hits, walking three and striking out three. Chase Stephens allowed seven runs in relief, while Steve Turnbull and Tim Gudex were each perfect in relief.
The Hawkeyes return to action Tuesday at Principal Park in Des Moines with an exhibition with the Iowa Cubs, the AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
