Evanston, IL – The University of Iowa dropped a pair of games to No. 16 Northwestern Sunday, 3-1 and 12-2 in five innings. The Wildcats snapped Iowa’s seven-game winning streak.

The Wildcats scored all three runs off solo home runs in game one. Freshman pitcher Brittany Weil surrendered solo shots in the second, third and fifth innings, but only allowed five hits in the contest. Weil struck out six and walked three.

Iowa’s lone hit of the contest came in the top of the seventh inning when junior Mindy Heidgerken added a solo home run for the Hawkeyes. Northwestern’s Eileen Canney held the Hawkeyes to just one hit and struck out 11 batters.

Senior Ali Arnold started game two and gave up seven runs and three extra base hits in the first inning and sophomore Steph Ackerson relieved her in the second inning. The Wildcats pushed across three more runs in the second inning for a 9-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes were able to plate two runs in the third off a two-run home run by Heidgerken, but the Wildcats scored two more runs in the fourth to finish the contest.

Iowa returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Ames to face Iowa State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
