The Hawkeyes lost to Penn State, 11-10 at Beaver Field on Sunday at Penn State. Iowa finished the series 3-1. The Hawkeyes are 4-4 in the Big Ten and 14-13 overall.

Nate Price went 2-3 and hit a lead-off home run to give the Hawkeyes a one run lead. It did not last long, as Penn State tied it in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double.

After Penn State took a two run lead heading into the fourth, Iowa came out strong, scoring eight runs. Ben Geelan walked and later scored when Dusty Napoleon homered down the right field line. Kevin Hoef singled to second and Ryan Considine reached when he was hit by a pitch. L.J. Mims singled and drove in Considine and Hoef. Price singled to right and Mims advanced to third. Mims scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Gryzwa. Price scored on an RBI single through the left side by Travis Sweet. Geelan reached on a single to shortstop. In his second at-bat of the inning, Napoleon hit an RBI single through the right side. Hoef singled to the right side and scored Geelan before he was picked off to end the inning.

Despite having a 9-3 lead, the Hawkeyes could not hold off the Lions. Penn State scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Iowa walked in the first run. With the bases loaded Lance Thompson stepped up to the plate for Penn State and hit a grand slam over right field. The Lions tied it, 9-9, when Cory Wine hit an RBI single to right center.

Iowa scored again in the fifth after Jason White tripled and was driven in by Mims to regain the lead. In the bottom of the sixth, with the game tied 10-10, Penn State’s Brian Ernst doubled to center to score Rick Marlin for the lead. The game was stopped after six innings due to a time limit that was agreed upon before the game so Iowa could catch a flight home.

Hawkeye starter, Travis Sweet (3-1) threw two innings, allowing two hits and two runs. The loss went to closer Tim Gudex, his first of the year.

The Hawkeyes play Nebraska on Tuesday at home. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
