CHAMPAIGN, IL – The University of Iowa Hawkeye baseball team was defeated by the Illinois Fighting Illini, 12-3, Friday night in Champaign. The loss puts Iowa’s record at 16-19 (5-8 in the Big Ten).
Illinois scored early and often against the Hawkeyes, scoring in all but two innings. The Fighting Illini outhit Iowa 16-5 on the day.
Illinois scored three runs in each of the first and second inning, then added another in the bottom of the third to take a 7-0 lead.
Iowa broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth by loading the bases for Kody McManis, who delivered a sacrifice fly. The Fighting Illini came back with three runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth to stretch their lead to 11-1.
The Hawkeyes posted a pair of runs in the seventh when Skyler Moss scored on a wild pitch and Jason White ripped an RBI single to center. Illinois ended the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the eighth.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader tomorrow at 3 p.m.
