Box Score

BLOOMINTONG, IL – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated in their rubber match with the Illinois State Redbirds Wednesday in Bloomington, IL, 5-2. Iowa (11-12) falls below the .500 mark for the first time this year.

The game was the third meeting between the three teams. Iowa won the first one 11-0, but the Redbirds won the second meeting 7-3 last week.

Illinois State got all five runs in the fifth inning when they took advantage of a costly Hawkeye miscue. The Redbirds loaded the bases with one out on a single and two hit batsmen, then Jesse Griswald reached on an error by third baseman Kevin Hoef, which allowed two runs to cross the plate. Illinois State got a pair of RBI base hits from Nick Christ and Mike Torkarski to take a 5-0 lead.

Iowa came back in the fifth with a pair of runs. The Hawkeyes loaded the bases with no outs when Ryan Gryzwa singled, Nate Price walked and Jason White beat out a bunt for a hit. Ben Geelan brought home the first Hawkeye run by drawing a walk. Iowa got another on an RBI groundout from Wes Freie, but couldn’t push any more across.

Iowa’s bullpen had another good night, with Steve Turnbull, Chris Zinn and Scott Brune holding the Redbirds off the board the rest of the way, but the Hawkeyes couldn’t come up with the runs.

The Hawkeyes will hit the road this weekend for a four-game series at Penn State.
