Junior Peaches Roach is an all-American for the third time after placing fourth in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Kingston, Jamaica, native is now just one of five Hawkeyes to have earned the elite status three times. Sophomore Kineke Alexander also advanced to the finals in the 400 meters, earning a chance to be both the national indoor and outdoor champ in the event this year.
Roach, a three-time Big Ten champion, placed fourth when she cleared 6-1.25. That mark is a collegiate best for Roach and also is a new outdoor school record. Roach holds the indoor high mark of 6-0.75. Roach won Big Ten indoor high jump titles in 2004 and 2005, and won the outdoor title in 2004, the same year she was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Alexander, who won her first NCAA title in this year’s indoor meet, advanced to the finals with a time of 51.49. With that time, Alexander now holds the fastest indoor and outdoor times in the 400 meters. By advancing to the finals, Alexander has the opportunity to become Iowa’s only four-time all-American. The only Hawkeye to have move all-American accolades is distance runner Nan Doak who has six.
The final day of the championships begins tomorrow at noon (CDT). Portions of Saturday’s events will be televised live by CBS. The air times are scheduled for 2:30-5 p.m. (CDT). Alexander will be running in the finals of the 400 meters at 3:10 p.m. and sophomore Shane Maier will be competing in the shot put finals beginning at 2:30 p.m. All events will be held at the Alex G.
