Hawkeye Camp Begins Next Week

July 7, 2006

Field hockey insiders have known for a long time that the University of Iowa is home to some of the greatest field hockey in the country. Now the Hawkeyes will share their knowledge and state-of-the-art facilities with over 100 campers for the annual Iowa Field Hockey Camp July 9-12.

Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum along with assistants Lisa Cellucci and Kristy Gleason will lead the camp with the help of current Iowa players. Former Hawkeye all-American Barb Weinberg will also be a counselor at the camp. Weinberg, who was a stand-out goalkeeper for the Hawkeyes, was recently selected to represent the United States in upcoming World Cup action.

The 122 campers include athletes aged 13-18 and incoming Hawkeye freshmen from California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. After arriving on campus this Sunday, the campers will be split into groups for four days of clinics and scrimmages.

“We’re excited to have athletes from all over the country come to town and experience what it’s like to be at the University of Iowa,” said Griesbaum. “It will be a great opportunity for our team to bond and get ready for the upcoming season, as well as share their skills and knowledge with younger campers.”
