Veselinovic Advances At Regional Competition

EAST LANSING, MI – Iowa competed in singles and doubles main draw action today at Midwest Regional competition, hosted by Michigan State University. In singles action, competing for the Hawkeyes were Merel Beelen, Hillary Mintz, Jacqueline Lee, and Mili Veselinovic. In doubles action was Mintz and freshman Kelcie Klockenga.

Merel Beelen first competed against Randi Schuler of Purdue, and lost, 6-1, 6-1. Beelen was also defeated in her consolation match, losing to Cigdem Duru of Purdue, 6-7, 6-1, 10-8. Hillary Mintz was defeated in her first match by Ally Mueller of Ohio State, 6-2, 7-5.

Jacqueline Lee was successful in her first singles match of the competition. Lee defeated Kali Kriski of Notre Dame in a hard fought match, with a score of 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Lee went on and was defeated by Sam Murray of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round.

In other singles action, Mili Veselinovic saw the most success today for the Hawkeyes. Veselinovic defeated Cecile Perton of Indiana, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round, and Kirsten Pahl of Western Michigan, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round. Veselinovic will face Christian Thompson of Notre Dame tomorrow.

In doubles action, only one Hawkeye duo competed today. Hillary Mintz and Kelcie Klockenga competed against Michigan’s duo of Kuehn/Sugiyama, and were defeated with a score of 8-2.

The Hawkeyes will return to action tomorrow at the Michigan State University Tennis Center.
