IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by Ohio State, 2-0 Friday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes couldn’t catch a break as three solid scoring chances didn’t equal goals.
Ohio State struck first in the 24th minute off a goal from Lara Dickenmann and the score remained 1-0 into halftime.
Iowa’s first scoring chance came in the 53rd minute when sophomore Stephanie Hyink took a cross inside the box and blasted a shot that sailed just wide of the target.
Sophomore Kelsie Full found the ball inside the 18-yard box and chipped a shot that also found the side-netting in the 61st minute.
After Ohio State added another goal in the 67th minute, the Hawkeyes nearly countered with a goal of their own in the 82nd minute. Junior Melisa Kaetterhenry sent in a corner to Hyink who ripped a shot to the far post. Two Ohio State defenders cleared the ball just before it could roll into the back of the net.
Senior goalkeeper Ali Becker recorded seven saves in the loss for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday against Minnesota. Match time at the Iowa Soccer Complex is set for 1 p.m.
