IOWA CITY – University of Iowa volleyball coach Cindy Fredrick won her 400th collegiate game Friday night when her Hawkeyes defeated Indiana, 3-0, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Fredrick is now 400-289 in her career, with a 36-46 record at Iowa.
The Hawkeyes got their first Big Ten win by scores of 30-20, 30-24 and 30-23. Iowa ups its record to 12-5 and is 1-4 in the Big Ten Conference.
“The only win I cared about tonight is the first win in Big Ten play,” Fredrick said. “One is much more important than 400 right now. All week long, people were talking about how we played last weekend, but the team was very resilient and came back strong tonight. When somebody knocks you down, you have to get back up.”
Freshman outside hitter Megan Schipper had a monster game, pounding out 13 kills and a career-high .423 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Catherine Smale was the team’s leading hitter with 14 kills.
Junior rightside hitter Stacy Vitali saw her first action of the year Friday, and hit at a team-high .444 clip (five kills, nine attempts, one error). She had been out with a shoulder injury.
Iowa cruised in game one, taking a 22-14 lead after scoring eight-of-ten points. The Hoosiers never threatened from that point on, and an Indiana attack error ended the game at 30-20.
Games two and three remained close through the first half, but in each contest Iowa made a late charge to put things out of reach and take the win.
Sophomore setter Kiley Fister put up 46 assists on the night, while sophomore libero Emily Hiza recorded a team-high 18 digs. Senior Tiana Costanzo also added 11 digs.
Iowa returns to action tomorrow night with a match against No. 9 Purude. First serve is set for 7 p.m., and admission is free to the public.
