Hawkeye senior Adam Hamilton won the weight throw with a season-best and NCAA provisionally qualifying 66-0 1/2 (20.13 meters) at the Iowa State Classic Friday night in Ames. His winning throw bettered his previous qualifying mark by over a foot. The weight throw field included 48 competitors.
Eight Hawkeyes recorded collegiate bests at the meet. Sophomore Andy Napier was Iowa’s second-highest placer on the day – finishing eighth with a collegiate-best 14:40.48 in the 5,000 meters. Sophomores Blake Schlotzhauer (14:40.66) and Mike Stout (16:02.04) also recorded collegiate bests in the 5,000 meters. The Hawkeyes’ other collegiate-best performances were in the 200 meters from senior David Pierre (22.01), sophomores Prince Riley (22.29) and Cannon Dolan (23.07) and freshmen Ray Varner (22.26) and Zach Splan (23.04).
The Hawkeyes will continue competition at the two-day co-ed meet Saturday. Events are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. in Lied Recreation-Athletic Facility on the Iowa State campus.
