VanDenend Provisionally Qualifies

SEATTLE, WA –

Hawkeye senior Micah VanDenend became the third Hawkeye to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships when he placed 16th in the 5,000 meters (14:08.06) at the Husky Classic in Seattle, WA, Saturday. Iowa senior Adam Hamilton (weight throw) and junior Shane Maier (shot put) are Iowa’s other two provisional qualifiers. Hawkeye senior Jeff Kent also ran in the Husky Classic 5,000 meters, placing 24th with a collegiate-best 14:18.86.

The rest of the Iowa squad competed in the second day at the Iowa State Classic in Ames. Iowa’s shot putters placed 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th in that event, with sophomore John Hickey recorded Iowa’s highest placing on the day with 11th (54-8).

Iowa’s next competition will be Friday, February 16 when it hosts the Iowa Invitational at the Recreation Building in Iowa City. Competing teams at the co-ed meet will be Iowa, Augustana, Coe, Grinnell and Wartburg. Events are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
