FRESNO, CA – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Fresno State, 13-10, Monday night in Fresno, CA. Iowa’s record falls to 3-2, while the Bulldogs are 8-11.
Designated hitter Brian Burmester paced the offence, going 3-of-5 with a pair of RBIs. Sophomore Wes Freie was 2-of-4 with a two-run home run, while Travis Sweet and Jason White were each 2-for-5 on the day.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single and a run-scoring wild pitch. Iowa responded in the top of the second when Freie tied the game with a mammoth home run off the scoreboard in left-centerfield.
Fresno then put five runs on the board in the third, using an RBI double, another run-scoring wild pitch and a three-run home run off the bat of Todd Sandell. Iowa countered with three runs in the fourth, but Fresno matched that total in the bottom of the inning to keep their five-run lead. It was more of the same in the fifth, with Iowa scoring a trio of runs and the Bulldogs answering with three of their own.
Iowa attempted a late rally, getting the bases loaded in each of the final two innings. The team’s best shot was in the top of the eighth, when the Hawkeyes had the heart of the order up with the bases loaded and no outs. After White scored on a wild pitch, Dusty Napoleon flew out to left, and the inning ended when Sweet was thrown out at home trying to score on a flyball from Freie.
In the ninth, Iowa loaded the bases with two outs and scored a run when Sweet was hit by a pitch, but a fly-out form Kevin Hoef ended the game.
Iowa and Fresno State will go at it again tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. (CDT).
